ABOVE: Constantine XI Palaiologos - The last Roman Emperor, seen here on the walls looking down upon the invading Ottomans, heroically died defending the City. With his death so died the ancient world.

The Fall of Constantinople was the capture of the Byzantine Empire's capital by the Ottoman Empire on Tuesday, May 29, 1453 (Julian Calendar).

The event marked the end of the political independence of the 1,000-year-old Byzantine Empire. The fall of Constantinople accelerated the scholarly exodus of Byzantine Greeks which caused the influx of Classical Greek Studies into the European Renaissance.

The date of the event also marks the end of the Middle Ages (Medieval) as a historical period.

It is today considered (in Greece) the most disastrous event in all of Greek history.
